About

Norma Boyd Powell

MS, RD, CDN

Originally from sweet home Alabama, I currently live in Connecticut with my husband, our daughters and our furry pup. I received both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in nutrition from the University of Alabama (Roll Tide!). After college, I completed my dietetic internship in Dallas, Texas and have been practicing as a Registered Dietitian for the last six years. Most recently, I developed a new outpatient nutrition program at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City. I love to cook and enjoy using my nutrition background to come up with nutritious (and delicious!) dishes. I also am a true southern lady at heart and can’t pass up the chance to host or have a dinner party! I started Lyra & Jane as a way to share recipes, tables and adventures with my family since I live far from home. Now, it has turned into more than just sharing with family and it is exciting to watch it grow!!

Okay, back to Lyra & Jane….Simply put, they are my grandmothers. Lyra is my father’s mother and Jane is my mom’s. These two women have shown me so much love throughout my life, not to mention the life lessons and recipes they have shared with me. They could not be more different, but boy are they the best!

Lyra, aka MaMa, is the epitome of a southern belle. She is sweet, charming and as elegant as they come. She is all about family traditions and celebrations and makes the best homemade brownies! She always had the greatest bedtime stories and can help you see the positive in almost any situation. Mama just celebrated her 95th birthday!! And even at that age, her memory is still better than mine.

Jane, aka Grandmomma, was the best friend any granddaughter could ask for. She was spunky, straight forward and always down for a road trip. She made the best boiled peanuts in town! Grandmomma went to heaven after a battle with adrenal cancer, but she left memories that will last a lifetime. It was hard to see her go, but knowing she is free of pain and dancing on the golden streets of heaven brings joy to my heart!

My grandmothers continue to inspire me, so it just made sense to name my blog after them. I created this space to share my love of cooking and nutrition with some life adventures sprinkled along the way. I hope you enjoy!
